55 BC

Around the end of his life, in the violent last years of the Republic. Lucretius writes On the Nature of Things — a six-book Epicurean epic arguing that the universe is only atoms and void and that the soul dies with the body, written to free its readers from fear of the gods and of death. Tradition (via Cicero) says it was edited for publication after his death.
