Xerxes I
Xerxes
Persian king who bridged the Hellespont and cut a canal through Mount Athos for his invasion of Greece (480 BC). Unnamed by Lucretius but unmistakable as "the one who paved a way over the great sea," a proverb of hubris and mortality.
